Itinerary What you’ll do

For both Essential and Ultimate travellers, your arrival week will typically look like this. Both programs start on a Friday.

Day 1

Arriving on a Friday between 8am and 6pm, you’ll be met at either Narita or Haneda airport by someone from our in-country work abroad partners. So that you can get used to using the trains and public transport, they’ll accompany you to your Tokyo accommodation where they’ll show you around and get you settled in.

Day 2

Day 3 and 4

Day 5

Day 6 and 7

Accommodation Where you’ll stay

Essential travellers

Your first five weeks’ accommodation will be in one of two Share Houses owned or regularly used by our in-country partners. The first is in Shiohama, close to Kiba station. Soley for interns and working holidaymakers, there’s a mix of dorm-style and twin rooms with a shared kitchen and two communal areas to hang with new friends. Think student housing, only with a 200 square metre rooftop terrace with sunbeds and a view over Tokyo.

The second Share House is in Saitama, a two-minute walk to Kita Toda station and a 25-minute train to Shinjuku. Made up of single, double and quad rooms, each room has a fridge and balcony; with shared kitchens and communal spaces to socialise. Around half of the residents are Japanese and the other half are overseas residents and working holidaymakers, so it’s a great place to meet others and practice your Japanese.

Ultimate travellers

Other costs

Japan working holiday visa

Currently all Japan working holiday visas are free, apart from for British passport holders. See our visa page for more.

Support funds

As a requirement of your working holiday visa, you’ll need to show proof of funds. This varies per nationality. See our visa page for more.

Travel insurance

You must purchase travel insurance before you enter Japan. Get an online quote here.

Flights

You can usually book flights up to 11 months before departure. The cost will depend on when you book and where you are flying from. We don’t recommend booking flights until your visa is approved. For Ultimate travellers, please note that flights and transport between Toyko and Sapporo New Chitose airport (the closest airports to the resorts of Niseko, Rusutsu or Furano) are not included.
