Being an Au Pair

An Au Pair is essentially a live in nanny or babysitter to a foreign family. Au Pair's are welcomed into and become part of their host family. They spend the majority of time will be spent caring for children, but Au Pairs often help around the house and participate in family activities as well. 

A typical New Zealand family has 2 to 3 children. Most New Zealand families live in urban areas with over half of New Zealand’s total population living in the cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
As an Au Pair in New Zealand, you will work an average of 30-45 hours per week, with wages of up to $330 NZD (approximately $250 USD) per week, plus a completion bonus of up to $1,040 NZD (approximately $780 USD). You will also be entitled to four weeks paid holiday, sick leave and public holidays.
Living with your matched family, you will be provided all meals. accommodation, and with most families, your own car. 

Day to day duties

As an Au Pair in New Zealand, you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of children – helping them to learn and grow. You will be required to take care of the children and help with light housework relating to the children. 

  • Waking the children in the morning and helping them to get dressed
  • Preparing meals for the children and getting them involved in the safe preparation and decision process
  • Caring, calm and responsive interactions are implemented as routines, such as diaper changing, changing of clothes, bottle feeding and bedtimes
  • Helping the children take care of their belongings and supporting them to tidy areas of play
  • Playing, reading and encouraging the children's interests through the implementation of experiences at home and in the local community
  • Maintaining consistency in family rules and routines, e.g. limiting the amount of TV watching, ensuring the children are going to bed at the correct time
  • Being mindful of and recording potential hazards in child play areas and ensuring close supervision and visibility at all times.

You will also be responsible for:

  • Implementation of inviting and educational experiences with the children
  • Attending Au Pair and child outings, play groups and events wherever possible
  • Daily entries in the Communication Book and environment checks, as well as ensuring the evacuation page is filled in
  • Attending professional development sessions run by Au Pair Link wherever possible and implementing these ideas as appropriate with the children
  • Positive and meaningful interactions with the children.
