Sure, everyone wants to Intern in Britain and everyone talks about London, but the UK is actually full of other business hubs too. London has been around for hundreds of years and though they can build up, many major companies of the world have been going to cities like Manchester to lay their European head office grounds. CRCC Asia answers for us: What makes Manchester a business capital?

Corporate Giants

Kellogg’s cereals, St Tropez tanning products, Lycra®… Just some of the famous brands to come out of Manchester a city of industry and invention. It’s no wonder global brands such as Adidas, Gazprom and The Bank of New York Mellon choose to have their UK Head offices here; as well as the likes of Google, Arup, Deloitte, Siemens, Sky, Pinsent Masons, Marks & Spencer, Guardian Media Group who see it as essential to have a major presence.

Start-ups

Manchester has always made an impact on a global scale, and perhaps is why it is such a great location to inspire new business and new ideas. This buzzing city is currently responsible for the highest number of start-up companies in the UK outside of London.

Missguided fashion retailer was one of these Manchester start-ups. In 2014, they were identified by the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 league table. Now they sell their clothes and accessories to over 80 countries worldwide and have recently created a collection collaborating with former Pussycat Doll, Nicole Scherzinger. In 2016, other notable Manchester start-ups included Lindy Bop – a vintage fashion retailer, particularly popular in Scandinavia; Evolution Money who provide loans; and LSE Retail Group – the online lighting retailer. Such is the diversity in commerce available in Manchester.

Sporting Giants

Not to mention Manchester as a sporting Mecca pulling millions into the economy every week and creating thousands of jobs and business opportunities. Of course, Manchester United and Manchester City come straight to mind but Manchester is also home to a number of other top tier local teams including the Manchester Titans American Football team, Manchester Rangers Rugby Club, Sale Sharks Rugby Union and the Lancashire Cricket Team, as well as being the home of British cycling. Sport undoubtedly plays an exciting part in funding this great city, driving the local economy and providing many job opportunities.

Infrastructure

One of the reasons Manchester continues to be so successful commercially due to it’s thriving infrastructure. It is extremely accessible, being home to the UK’s third busiest airport with direct flights to over 10 destinations in the US, and countless others worldwide. The metro link system is now the largest light rail system in the country and means you can get to most major towns surrounding the city easily. Not to mention Manchester Piccadilly train station which has direct trains to all the other major cities in the UK, taking just 2 hours to reach London. Manchester is aspiring towards its status as a true global city, on par with the likes of San Francisco or Berlin. It is undoubtedly a disruptor, a new frontier for established global companies that they would be foolish to ignore and an exciting first home for start-ups.
