Intern in Britain participant, Kalyn, visited Dover while interning abroad and discovered a beautiful, historic, shoreline treasure.

Interested in historic castles? Want to see France from across the English Channel? Looking for somewhere to put your feet in the water and walk along the shoreline?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above, consider taking a trip to Dover.

Located in Southeast England, Dover’s got the history and views that make for a great trip for almost anyone, no matter your interests.

Dover Castle

Dover castle was built in the 12th century and has served the English well since its early days. You can walk through its medieval tunnels, take in the stunning port from up in the keep, or go on a guided World War II tour that explores the use of the castle as a way to fend off the Germans and treat and care for English soldiers.

Walmer Castle

Less of a traditional castle and more of a stately home, Walmer Castle was often visited by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. You can take a guided tour of the inside, which is great for a rainy day, but be sure not to miss the gardens.

White Cliffs of Dover

The cliffs of Dover are a famous sight and memorialized in Vera Lynn’s 1940s song, “The White Cliffs of Dover.” They’re great for hiking and long walks across the shore and you can see the French town of Calais on a clear day.

Fish and Chips

Dover is a proper seaside town with some great options for authentic and fresh fish and chips. Get them from a ‘takeaway’ shop and eat on a bench along the coastline, or book yourself a table at a sit-down restaurant to have them served to you. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

Deal Pier

To watch the early morning fisherman or enjoy breakfast out near the sea, take a walk along Deal Pier, a famous landmark and part of the area’s local history. There are also some family-owned shops and pubs across the street, perfect to continue the afternoon.
