North Carolina Project
Arizona and California fully booked? No problem! Join our brand-new North Carolina project and get involved in life-changing environmental conservation projects in stunning National Parks all around Asheville including Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Due to its diverse natural environment marked by forests, mountains, rivers, waterfalls and lakes as well as its cultural assets, Asheville has been ranked one of the most popular destinations for outdoor recreation and activities.
As a BUNAC volunteer you are guaranteed to be placed in exciting group projects all around North Carolina. Typical activities include restoring hiking trails, moving logs and boulders, fencing and re-vegetation in some of the world’s most incredible scenery such as Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Cumberland Gap National Park in Kentucky as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway which extends from Asheville north all the way to Virginia. Conservation projects usually last 4 days or 9 days consecutively, with either 3 days or 5 days off in between volunteering periods.
Your base depends on the type of project you will be doing and the location. If your project is in proximity to Asheville then you are likely to stay at the volunteer house. However, most volunteers also get the opportunity to camp right in the heart of America’s most breath-taking landscapes while working on a project. While some project locations have developed campgrounds with warm showers, the majority are in remote and beautiful locations and have basic or no facilities, meaning volunteers get a real experience of living with just the bare necessities! Food is provided at each project and volunteers cook with their teams, taking turns preparing meals for the whole group.
On days off
Having completed your volunteer project, you will stay in group style housing in Asheville on your off days. The volunteer house is fully equipped with communal bedrooms, cooking areas, living rooms, bathrooms and a large backyard for relaxing outdoors and ideal to recover from your challenging days on project. Should the house not be available, you will be spending off days during your first several weeks in a youth hostel.
BUNAC volunteers love to explore and check out other cities on their off days. Asheville is well connected by public transport and is within a one day’s bus ride of New York City, Washington DC, Orlando, Florida, all the beaches of Florida, the music scene in Nashville TN, as well as other major cities such as Charlotte, NC, Greenville, SC, Knoxville, TN, and Atlanta, GA. You will never run out of options for travel and exploration whilst based in Asheville.
