My highlight in New Zealand

Four hours north of Auckland is the Bay of Islands, and Paihia is at the heart of this often overlooked, but unmissable, area of New Zealand’s North Island.  Paihia comes alive in the summer as foreign and native tourist’s head north to take advantage of the many water-based activities on offer.  Sailing around the 144 islands dotted throughout the bay, kayaking, snorkelling, jet-skiing, swimming with dolphins and looking out for Orcas, or fishing for Marlin – Paihia has it all.  You can also dive down and explore the Rainbow Warrior – the flagship of the Greenpeace fleet which was sunk by the French foreign intelligence services in the 1980’s and now lies as an artificial reef just 10 minutes from Paihia.  For those of you that enjoy the easy life, there are also plenty of golden beaches in the Bay for you to kick back on!
