Samantha shares her thoughts and feelings about moving to Canada on her first working holiday on BUNAC's Work Canada programme. She's never been abroad on he own before, but she will be in safe hands with BUNAC throughout her time on the programme.
The first thing people ask me when I tell them I’m going to move to Canada is… why Canada? Maybe it’s the fact you can ski and surf on the same day, maybe it’s the wonderful and breath-taking wildlife and hopefully the chance to see a moose! Or maybe it’s the poutine. Chips, cheese and gravy goodness, yum!
I have never been abroad on my own before, or travelled for an extended period of time, so when it came to deciding what I wanted to do over the next year, I knew what I wanted to do, be brave and move to Canada. It was a hard decision, but one I knew I would never regret, even if things go wrong, it’s just a plane ride home after all.
I just needed a bit of encouragement to help me do it. After attending a BUNAC work abroad talk in London and answering my many questions, I booked on to the full placement option that evening. I’m glad I did this as it gave a lot of valuable information about Canada and the visa process and what to do. If I hadn’t signed up to BUNAC and got the information, I don’t think I would have got a visa, let alone be number 300!
After planning the trip in my head I had decided I wanted to go to Vancouver, I had done my research, booked my flight and just needed to get the interview. Little did I know that after receiving the information about the resorts, I knew I had made a mistake, my heart was with Blue Mountain Resort in Ontario. After panicking that I had made a mistake, I phoned BUNAC and they were able to change my flight and get me an interview with Blue Mountain. I was so relieved, and it was easy to do, BUNAC were so helpful with the changeover.
Now, I have my flight booked, got a job waiting for me, met some great people on Facebook where we can talk about our upcoming adventures and are already planning on what we will do in Iceland and Toronto before heading to Blue Mountain.
Now it’s just a waiting game until the day we leave for our adventure. Only 24 days, 18 hours and 59 minutes to go, not that I’m counting or anything.
