Our resident BUNA-Down Under, Charlotte, checks in as she hits the 3-month mark of her Aussie adventure on Work Australia! Want to know how the first month went? Get the skinny on the Group Flight, Hong Kong stopover and touch down in Sydney here!
It's official fellow BUNAcers: as of today (16th April), the BUNAC Work Australia Group Flight January 2012 has hit the 3 month mark! We're a quarter of the way through our 12 months and it’s insane how fast time flies, so every moment has to count. And that's how you have the best year of your life!
When we last spoke, I was on my way to Melbourne from Sydney and I've been here ever since! I got to Melbourne and within an hour of arriving, I knew I wanted to stay here for a few months to work, and save up for more travelling fun! That's the beauty of Work Australia - you have the total flexibility to travel and work anywhere you want!
One of the things I’ve found most difficult is choosing where to live and work. There are so many beautiful places that it makes it an impossible task! The hardest choice for me was between Melbourne and Sydney.
Sydney has so many things to do: the amazing sights of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, fantastic nightlife and the beautiful city centre to explore. The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb was one of the best experiences I have had so far, and the gorgeous Hunter Valley and Blue Mountains are only a train ride away. I would recommend anyone to keep these on their bucket list!
Melbourne, on the other hand, is more open and chilled and is a favourite among backpackers, with its many districts to explore, such as the beachside St. Kilda and the cool Brunswick Street, full of vintage shops and cafes. Plus, the stunning views of the Great Ocean Road are only a few hours drive away - I explored it over Easter weekend and it is truly beautiful. And you get to see the lighthouse from the show 'Round the Twist' along the way!
To help those thinking about doing Work Australia, or those who are counting down the days until their epic Group Flight, other beautiful places that were in the running for me were:
Byron Bay: Known as a surfer's dream and, although being a relatively small town, it has one of the most relaxed and friendly atmospheres I have experienced. Its bohemian vibe and stunning views are worth the stay, plus you can take a hike to the most Easterly point of Australia!
Surfer's Paradise: Perfect for party animals. With its many theme parks, stunning beaches and fantastic nightlife, it's like Blackpool, only with a lot more sun, beautiful beaches and surfers!
Brisbane: I like to call it the 'Outdoor City', because of its gorgeous walk along the river and man-made lagoon in the middle of the city. Watch out for the wet season though, as the torrential rain makes any outdoor activities a bit more difficult!
And there are so many places that I haven't been yet that I can't wait to explore! Some of the BUNACers are heading West for the winter: to Perth, where the sunshine is permanent, Queensland for the Great Barrier Reef and the Northern Territory for Darwin, the best place to learn about the aboriginal culture, and of course, the gorgeous Uluru (Ayer's Rock). It makes working all the more worthwhile when you have the travel bug buzzing in your ear!
Stay tuned for my next update! Before I know it, we'll hit the six month mark and then we're over half way of our amazing year in Australia! Like I said before, a year is not enough!
