Work America 2017 alumni Jia spent her summer Stateside, working in a candy store on the USA's east coast. We caught up with our sweet-toothed adventurer to see how she got on...

Hey Jia! So tell us, where did you spend your summers working on BUNAC's Work America programme?

I spent my summer working at Candy Kitch in Ocean City, Maryland.

Awesome! And where did you hear about the programme?

My cousin and his friend participated in the programme in 2016 – they told me I had to do it!

What was a typical working day like for you?

The store was incredible – so many colours and countless variations of candy, chocolate and fudge. I got to sample a lot of its and chatted away to the customers, each day was so much fun.

And what were the highlights of your job?

Definitely all of the friends I made through work. Candy Kitchen hires dozens of international staff so everyone is super friendly and going through the same experience.

What did you do in your spare time?

We lived less than a five minute walk away from the beach so we’d either chill out their or in our shared apartments – plus we planned our end of summer travelling diary.

What was the social life like where you were based?

As most people were working in the US just for the summer we always made the most fo our time. Lots of road trips and playing at the MANY adventure golf courses in Ocean City!

Did you do much travelling in the USA? Let us know you highlights!

I went to quite a few places such as Niagara Falls, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and New York. It was great having an extra 30 days of US travel after my job finished.

Finally, what advice would you have for someone considering signing up to Work America?

Go for it! Sign up and prepare for everything early! It's ok to not be ok for the first few weeks or so when you reach there as everything is new. Make new friends and never let bad experiences to get in the way of the good ones. Have fun at work and travel and explore as much as you can!
