Lucy loved her first Summer Camp USA experience (at a Special Needs camp) so much that she’s returning again in summer 2018. We asked her a couple of questions about her time at camp …

Hey Lucy. Tell us where you spent your summer:

Camp Allen which is in Bedford, New Hampshire.

How did you hear about Summer Camp USA?

I first heard about summer camp at sixth form college, where a lecturer came to talk to us about going out to work on camps - I instantly fell in love with the idea.

Were you nervous when you got placed at a Special Needs camp?

Yes definitely, but at the same time I was excited for the challenge. I initially didn’t select the special needs option when I first applied, but then I thought, “what would I learn?” So I ticked the box, and Camp Allen were the first camp to get in touch with me. I could never imagine working on any other camp now. I loved it so much that I am going back to Camp Allen in 2018. It is a camp that means so much to the campers, and it’s a happy place.

What was a typical day like for you at camp?

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were the same time everyday, so we would do different activities around those. We would have an entire camp activity every morning and night. We would also have allocated swimming time, and oh boy did the campers love to swim! For some it was the only time of year that they had the opportunity to go swimming, so that made it really special for them. The activities were different everyday, and some days were theme days. My favourite theme day was Disney day, and my cabins theme was Star Wars; being a cabin of young boys, they loved it!

What would you say to anyone who is thinking about working on a Special Needs camp but isn’t sure they have the right experience?

I’d say give it a go! I learned so much this summer and definitely grew as a person. You don’t really need the experience, just the open mindedness to give it a chance. It’s honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done, and has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.

Did you do much travelling after camp?

I did! I started in Boston, and from there went to New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D. C. (my personal favourite), then back up to New York and Boston. Make sure you have saved enough money and thoroughly budgeted - Save up all you can and go and have a blast! There is so much to do and see in America, so go and enjoy it! There is something for everyone. I managed to catch one of my favourite bands live in Boston which was epic.

Finally, do you have any advice for someone considering signing up to the Summer Camp USA programme?

In the words of Shia LeBeouf, JUST DOOOO IT! It’s one of the best things you will ever do. I’ve become a lot more confident since doing it, and have developed so many more skills.

If Lucy has inspired you to get to camp and start your own camp journey, what are you waiting for? Start your application now and get to the happiest place on Earth.
