Not sure where to start on your working holiday? We asked BUNAC’s Emma to give us the lowdown on how she travelled the East Coast while she worked and travelled Aus.

Touch Down in Sydney

Take a walk down to Darling Harbour where you’ll find a range of shops, restaurants, tourist activities, boat cruises and a Chinese garden of friendship! You’ll then come to Sydney Harbour Bridge – if you’re feeling adventurous the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is a must-do while in the city.

You can’t go to Sydney without exploring some of its famous beaches. Heard of Bondi Beach? Thought so! Make sure you check this off your bucket list as well as exploring Manly (great for a sunset cruise) and Palm Beach (one for all the Home and Away fans).

Just outside of Sydney you can take a tour or a train to the Blue Mountains to see the Three Sisters rock formation – there you can board the steepest passenger railway in the world!

Surfs Up in Byron Bay

A popular spot for surfers, Byron Bay is known for its spectacular beaches. Live like a local and try your skills out on the waves with a surf lesson. Also, be sure to take a trip to the Cape Byron Lighthouse, the easternmost point of mainland Australia.

Beach Hop Along the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is known for its beaches, Surfers Paradise being one of them!  Start at Burleigh Heads for an amazing view of the Gold Coast stretch - you won’t be disappointed. Explore the stunning national parks, take a drive-up Mount Tamborine or visit Lamington National Park for amazing views and a treetop walk.

Bag yourself a pre-arranged job, only an hour inland from the Gold Coast in a beautiful rural resort only a stone's throw away from the action on the coast.

Hit Up the Capital of Queensland, Brisbane

There is always something to do in Brisbane! Explore the shops down Queen Street, experience the nightlife at Fortitude Valley, soak up the best views of the city at Kangaroo Point and swing by South Bank for a swim in the lagoon and a relaxed evening of food and drink.

The Gold at the End of Rainbow Beach – Fraser Island

The gateway to Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach is a small town where most backpackers spend the night before going to Fraser Island. Not only is Fraser Island a World Heritage Site but it’s the largest sand island in the world! With lots to explore check out our Top 10 Things to do on Fraser Island and if you wanted to stay even longer, bag yourself a pre-arranged job on the island with our Job Before You Go programme.

Set Sail Around Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays

Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsundays and there are lots of options to explore the area by cruise either during the day or overnight. Make sure to stop by the famous Whitehaven beach known for its stunning white sand.

Get Pulled to Magnetic Island

If living the island life was for you, Magnetic Island attracts backpackers with its secluded beaches and rugged landscape. Explore the island by hiring a real-life Barbie car...yes life really is fantastic on Magnetic Island.

Adventure calls on Mission Beach

Backpackers everywhere have heard of Mission Beach! Why? It’s the place all adrenaline junkies go to take on the ultimate challenge – a skydive! If this sounds like you, make sure you make a pit stop here – sorry Mum!

Last Stop: Cairns

Round off your road trip with even more adventure – a bungee jump and diving the Great Barrier Reef is definitely a must! Once back down to earth, make time to explore the Atherton Tablelands, visit the beautiful Millaa Millaa Falls and pretend you're in the Herbal Essences advert (everyone does it...)

With so much to do in Cairns, you’ll never be short of things to do and with BUNAC’s Job Before You Go programme you can spend some of your working holiday here working in a 5* luxury resort!
