Summer Camp USA - Information for Camp Directors

BUNAC’s Summer Camp USA program offers each camp a professional, personal, friendly and selective counselor placement service. We aim to provide the best possible placement for an overseas counselor applicant, as well as an overall quality summer camp experience for both camp and counselor.

Our commitment to quality is known and appreciated by camp directors and program participants. They understand that there are differences in structure and philosophy between counselor placement programs which affect a camp’s chances of success with overseas staff.

Structure

Summer Camp USA is the camp counselor program of BUNAC, the British Universities North America Club. This is BUNAC’s 36th year of placing overseas counselors on US and Canadian summer camps. BUNAC is a non-profit, educational exchange organization specializing in operating reciprocal overseas work/travel programs for students and other young people around the world.

BUNAC was set up in 1962 and has representatives on most campuses. In Australia and New Zealand we recruit for Summer Camp USA through BUNAC’s subsidiary organisation, IEP, International Exchange Programs. BUNAC also works with co-operators and representatives in other countries to recruit staff for camps.

Summer Camp USA counselors come to the USA on a special J-1 exchange visitor program sponsored by IENA, International Exchange of North America. The program is administered according to the guidelines for international camp counselor programs laid down by the US and Canadian governments.

The BUNAC Difference

  • Individual placement -  When you receive a Summer Camp USA counselor dossier, you get an application selected especially to suit your camp. You are the only director to receive this dossier.
  • Personal service -  All applicants are interviewed face-to-face by one of our panel of interviewers, all well-acquainted with summer camps. Your regular year-round contact is with our Connecticut staff who are eager to get to know you and your camp’s needs.
  • Experience and professional expertise -  Our US placement staff are knowledgeable and experienced in international counselor placement. They know camps and they know what to look for in an application. We aim to get the right match.
  • Cost effectiveness - BUNAC’s non-profit structure generally enables participants to receive more in-hand pocket money while the total costs to camps remain competitive.
  • Mature, skilled, qualified counsellors - Our counselors are generally 19 or older and if students, will usually have completed at least one year of college or university.
  • Summer support - During the summer, in order to provide fuller and more immediate back-up for camps and counselors, we open a second office in New York City.
  • Cultural exchange - BUNAC counselors bring an extra, special dimension to camp life. Your campers will benefit from their motivation, enthusiasm and desire to share their culture with the children.
