However, in this geography lesson, there are no wrong answers. As most camps get a front row seat onto these beautiful landscapes and America is mostly hot and sunny throughout the summer months, location and weather play less of a deciding factor when looking at camps. Our advice? Connect with the camp that best fits your skills and interests - not the location that hits your bucket list. Afterall, that’s what your 30 days of travelling after camp are for!

At BUNAC, we’ve been running our Summer Camp USA programme for over 50 years. Chosen for their location, ethos and the experience they provide for both staff and campers, we work with Camp Directors from almost 300 camps. All the summer camps we work with are accredited by the American Camps Association (ACA), which means they comply with over 300 safety standards.

How it works

Having to say which is the best summer camp is like having to pick your favourite country (America) or ice cream flavour (all of them). An all star line-up of lakeside beaches, pine forests and bluebird skies… whichever camp you work at, you’ll come away thinking your camp was the best and want to return year after year.

Camp in America Dates

Summer camps in America start between May and June each year and run for nine weeks until mid-August. All applicants must be able to fly out to the USA by the 20th June. Your J-1 visa then allows you to travel in the USA for 30 days after camp.

We wondered when Parent Trap would make an appearance! Just like the movies, these independently owned camps are usually in picturesque waterfront locations with rustic cabins and a heavy focus on activities. From watersports instructors to rock climbing coaches, Camp Directors recruit for a wide range of Activity Specialists as well as traditional Camp Counsellors.

Non Profit Camps

With lower fees and scholarship places, Non-Profit Camps are aimed at providing an affordable experience for all children - irrespective of their socio-economic background. Like Private Camps, they’re often in beautiful locations with rustic accommodation and a focus on teamwork activities. Creating a summer to remember for less-privileged kids, your work can have a huge impact.

These camps provide an accessible and adapted camp experience for children and young adults with a range of physical and learning disabilities. With smaller groups sizes, you’ll form unbreakable bonds with the children you support. Camp Directors aren’t always looking for previous experience, just candidates with the right personality and a passion for making a difference.

Girl Scout Camps are for female campers only – although some may hire male as well as female staff. As empowering for the campers as they can be for you, these camps are all about enabling young women to be independent, confident and strong leaders. Girls Scout Camps usually have a heavy focus on outdoor living, developing new skills and connecting with nature.

Faith based summer camps focus on exactly the same sports, outdoor adventures and creative arts as traditional summer camps. And just like traditional camps, they’re often in stunning locations. Many don’t require any religious background or beliefs – just bags of enthusiasm, leadership skills and an open mind. The inclusion of religious values varies per camp.
