GAP YEAR ADVICE FOR ‘A’ LEVEL RESULTS DAY

When ‘A’ level results are announced on Thursday 17th August 2006, unexpected results (both better and worse) will mean some students find themselves in the position of taking a gap year which they have not planned for.

Each year, BUNAC (www.bunac.org) the market leader in overseas work and volunteer programmes, helps thousands of young people to take a break from work or studies on a work abroad experience of a lifetime. Working holidays enable ‘gappers’ to enjoy an extended stay in a foreign country, build CV-enhancing skills, earn money to fund further travels and, most importantly, live and breathe another culture as more than just a tourist. Planning an overseas trip needn’t seem like a daunting and time-consuming task if you enlist the support of a reliable organisation like BUNAC. During its 45 year history, BUNAC has accumulated a wealth of expertise, a solid network of support services in the UK and abroad, and can now offer a diverse range of affordable work and volunteer programmes in every single continent.

BUNAC’s working holiday programmes include Gap Canada. This 12-month Open Work Authorisation - only available from BUNAC – allows participants to spend up to a year in paid employment in order to finance their trip. They have the flexibility to enter Canada at any time before 31st January 2007, however quick visa processing means students can arrive in the country within just six weeks of confirming their university place for 2007. This is an attractive proposition for the hundreds of travellers looking to find winter resort work at one of the Job Fairs held in towns such as Whistler in British Columbia or Banff in the Canadian Rockies in early October. The programme fee of £160 covers programme talks, support and advice from BUNAC in the UK and from BUNAC’s partner organisation in Canada. It also includes visa administration to secure the Work Authorisation and a comprehensive Canada Handbook with listings on a wide range of job vacancies from employers all over Canada.

Gappers looking to embark on a working holiday further afield could be setting foot in Australia or New Zealand within just six weeks of submitting their application. For programme fee of £450, Work Australia and Work New Zealand participants can enjoy a range of benefits and services including superb on-the-spot overseas support from BUNAC’s subsidiary organisations in Sydney and Auckland.

Volunteer South Africa, Volunteer Ghana, Volunteer Peru, Volunteer Costa Rica and Volunteer Cambodia are available to Gap Year students keen to contribute to a worthwhile community project for a period of five weeks to six months. BUNAC also offers popular and affordable summer programmes to the USA including Summer Camp USA. Most BUNAC programmes are also open to travellers up to the age of 35 looking to take time out overseas on an extended career break.
