BUNAC Scholarships now open to students
Cash-strapped students planning post-graduate studies in the USA or Canada starting in Autumn 2008 can ease the financial burden by applying for a scholarship from BUNAC*, an organisation specialising in work abroad programmes to North America. Now open for applications, BUNAC’s Educational Scholarship Trust (BEST) is looking to distribute up to $50,000 among deserving applicants looking to gain further qualifications overseas while enjoying first-hand experience of North American life.
The BUNAC scholarships are open to UK citizens who have, during the last five years, been in full-time higher education at a UK college or university and who have already applied for a postgraduate course in the USA or Canada for the 2008/09 academic year. There are no restrictions on the type of course – choices, in previous years, have ranged from legal studies to film-making – provided they last between three months and three years. At the judging stage, preference is given to applicants whose studies are most likely to further transatlantic understanding, or to those who need to go to the USA or Canada to complete a specific course.
Individual awards typically range between $5,000 and $10,000 and are designed to cover study, living and travel costs. The BEST Scholarships are only top-up funds and candidates should actively be seeking funding from other sources. A specific award of $4,000 for sports-related studies and another $2,000 for a teaching or geography-related course are also available.
A 2008 BEST Scholarship Application Pack can be downloaded
here. Applicants need to complete an application form and submit an academic and a personal reference. The deadline for applications is March 14th 2008. Short-listed applicants will be invited to attend an interview in London in June. For further information, visit
