Skills, thrills and a non-stop social life! My gap year in New Zealand so far...

Steve Gellett, 20, from Liverpool, kicked off his Work New Zealand gap year in style last February when he took BUNAC’s group flight to Auckland…

BUNAC’s group flight

The group flight was great and I’m still in touch with most of the people from there – many of them pass through the hostel I’m staying at and bar I work at.

Travels and plans

I took part in a Kiwi Bus adventure around the whole of the North & south island – I loved it! My plan is to stay in New Zealand for almost the full 23 months and my trip is culminating with the world cup before heading home for Xmas 2011.

Skills and Thrills

The staff at the Auckland office managed to get me a place on the skills and thrill course with 30-40 people I’m still in touch with most of them. Instructors were great on the course...For 3 hours in the evening for two weeks I learnt everything from bar etiquette, cocktail making and general bar customer service – I even learnt how to make a decent coffee without using a kettle!

The job-hunt!

After I’d been out here for a few months and had the chance to do some travelling around the North and South island it was time to get a job… I’ve never worked in a bar before, but having these skills allowed me to land a job in Fusion, one of Auckland’s biggest bars.

Social scene

The bar where I work is right next to my hostel and the social scene is amazing – by working at Fusion I’ve met so many great people and I feel really part of things here in Auckland. I’m staying in a long-term hostel which has been great for meeting new people. I really feel like part of a traveller community! And of course, I regulary pop into the IEP office (BUNAC’s partners in New Zealand) and found all of the guys there really helpful
