Get me back to Canada!

Exeter University student, Jim, tells us about his Work Canada experience!

Home to moose (impossible to spot), wolves (even harder) and bears (absolutely everywhere…), Canada is home to some of the most awe-inspiring natural environments and breath-taking cities on the planet.

Having been lucky enough to explore a large part of Canada in the beautiful national parks of Jasper, Banff and Yoho, I am eager to return as soon as possible! BUNAC offers a unique opportunity to experience the majesty of Canada at your leisure with a working holiday visa. In the cool summer months, the Canadian Rockies are the ideal place for any outdoor enthusiast whether your mode of transport is a bike, a raft, a canoe, a Para-glider or even just your own two feet. During the winter you can take to the slopes by board or skis and experience the same mountains in a whole new light.

During the couple of weeks I spent in the Rockies, I encountered many Brits using their working holiday visas differently from working in tourist gift shops, as mountain bike instructors or in Tim Horton outlets (best coffee/doughnuts place in the world). Most had come over for the ski season and loved it so much they stayed until the summer to fund further travels in Canada and the USA. Picturesque towns such as Banff and Jasper are busiest during the summer and the winter season, so there is a huge demand for seasonal workers in all areas of work.

There is also plenty of work to be found in cities such as Vancouver on the west coast where the sea breeze brings a kind climate, the people are friendly and there is plenty of culture for every taste; probably just some of the reasons Vancouver is consistently voted one of the top places to live globally. Or maybe it’s the Tim Horton’s – did I mention they were good? On the east coast you can find Toronto, home to the CN tower (with glass floor) that is a must for anyone with a head for heights and if you’re feeling really brave why not hang yourself off the tower on an edge walk! You’ll also find Montreal and Quebec, which feel charmingly European with a Canadian twist.

So there you go, get yourself to Canada to get your fix of natural beauty, snow-capped peaks, spectacular cities and adrenaline filled activities. From summer to winter, this is a country for all seasons and BUNAC have the solution for people who want to experience it all. Get yourself to Canada and if it’s not possible to take me with you, bring me back a doughnut! (please!).
