Working on a beachside amusement park

Work America appealed to me as it was the chance to experience a whole new way of life. I knew I didn’t want to just do the average mundane summer job like working in a shop.

I wanted to do something that would give me a once in a lifetime experience and working in America full time for 3 months lets you see the USA in a way that wouldn’t be possible if you were just on a two-week holiday.

The idea of meeting lots of like-minded people was also encouraging, as was the opportunity to travel at the end of it. The fact that the visa allows 4 weeks of travel definitely gives you a real motivation and something to strive towards whilst you are working out there.

My job
I worked full time on a small family-run amusement park on Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. My job title was Ride Operator/ Game Attendant. I would work between 6 and 10 hours per day. One day I would start at 1pm having a two hour break at 5pm then continuing until 11pm. Other days I would not begin a shift until 5pm. Working on a game meant encouraging visitors to spend their money to play your game and ensuring the safety of guests.

Accommodation
I lived in a beautiful beach house situated 1 minute from the beach front, for which I paid $1,100 for the whole 3 months. I shared it with 3 other girls. There were 2 bedrooms, a kitchenette and a bathroom. It was very sweet, comfortable and homely.

It was definitely a wonderful experience, I wouldn’t change anything. I had a great time, travelled to some amazing places and made lifelong friends.

Travelling and having fun
The parties after work each night were a definite highlight, as was travelling to Jamaica for a week’s holiday with our hard earned money before visiting Philly, Washington and New York. Standing at the top of the Empire State building at night seeing the lit-up NY skyline was definitely one of those “WOW” moments.

Hot weather!
It was kind of a challenge to adjust to the weather, as the temperature reached 40 degrees on many occasions which is way to high for my fair, Irish skin! Long hours at work could also be testing but the wages and the bonus we achieved at the end made them worth it.

I would recommend Work America to anyone interested in doing something exciting and unique this summer. The stories you come back home raving about will bore friends and family for years!!
