Keane Shaw, 19 from Nottingham, tells us how Work America helped kick start his dream career in fashion!
I'd like to share my BUNAC experience with everyone.
I always dreamed of working and living in America, but wanted to test out the real deal before I settled on moving there. BUNAC was the perfect way for me to do this.
I left for America on 6th July and headed to Boston. I had no job arranged and had arranged accommodation via craigslist, living with college students attending North-eastern University. My first priority was to find work. I wandered around the city handing out CVs and enquiring everywhere. Then I came across an Open Call day at American Apparel, on Boston's best shopping destination, Newbury Street.
On July 18th I went to the Open Call, being the only boy and probably the only Englishman out of 40/50 people. I got a call a week later and, what do you know, I got the job!
I have always dreamed of a career in fashion or working in retail and never got the chance in UK, so to work for one of the best, most recognised companies globally in Boston, MA was a dream I never thought would have came true.
I worked my socks off, working 65 hours a week (one day doing a 20 hour shift overnight!)
This hard work paid off resulting in getting transferred to American Apparel on Oxford Street, London when I came home.
After I finished working in Boston I went travelling for 2 weeks around North East America, visiting New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
I never could have done this without the help of BUNAC and I look forward to completing the programme again next year.
