My summer working at a US Country Club

Last summer I spent just under four months taking part on BUNAC’s Work America programme, living and working in Peoria, Illinois. I knew that I wanted to work in a ‘proper’ job getting a taste of the real America, and I found the flexibility of Work America particularly appealing.

I found a job in a Country Club and was hired as a waiter. As the summer progressed, I took the opportunity to work in other areas of the club helping to plan and manage private parties and other club-related events, such as golf outings and swim meets.

I was living and working closely with most of the Country Club staff and I made some great friendships, which I know will last for a long time to come. The travel opportunities were amazing! I especially appreciated the close proximity of Chicago, as I was able to spend most of my days off exploring the “Windy City”.

On my way back to the UK I stopped off in New York City. Never having been there before, I visited the usual sights, such as the Empire State Building and Times Square, as well as exploring the different neighbourhoods around Manhattan. An amazing summer all round!
